JIM BUTTON,
TELLING TALES.

Recess Is Over

I took a 10 day break from my chemotherapy, and just went back on at 4am this morning.

I’ve come to the conclusion, as you saw in my previous chemo break blog, that having a recess now is as good as it was when I was in elementary school.

I get additional energy back so I can go out and do things to burn it off, I find I have better focus, I forget about how tough it was before recess and can restart with renewed optimism, and I generally just find it easier to be happy.

I think we all underestimate the value of a recess. We should step away from the computer and give ourselves a break, and do it often during the day.

We should go outside more and play. And make sure to add unplanned, no boundaries kinda play. Do something different, a change of scenery is just as good as any change.

Eat dessert first. Heck eat only dessert one meal and seriously enjoy it.

I know I’ve gotten into a routine, a routine that happens to have kept me out of the hospital since August 05, 2020, and I am now adding recesses into my plan cause I know they help me mentally. And I believe the happier I am, the more I move and the more I play with others, the better my odds are.

Oh, and the adjustments Tracey and I have made along this journey have gotten me to the five year mark since my initial one year terminal diagnosis.

And that’s all I could ask for.

PS remind me to tell you that while it’s nice to recognize the milestones, it’s equally important not to put too much stock in the initial prognosis.

You do have an impact on the timing…
